What is Geotechnical Monitoring?

Geotechnical monitoring is the process of analysing the behaviour of ground, structures and surrounding environment to assess stability and performance over time. It is commonly used on construction sites, slopes and embankments to identify any movement, deformation, vibration or groundwater changes, or any other conditions that can impact safety and structural integrity.

Accurate monitoring is fundamental to safe and efficient asset management, enabling organisations to prioritise resources where they are needed most whilst effectively managing risk. As the impacts of climate change continue to increase, the ability to monitor ground movement, structural stress, groundwater pressures and asset performance in real-time provides valuable insights into changing conditions. This allows potential issues to be identified early, support proactive maintenance and intervention and helps to reduce the likelihood of unexpected failures, disruption and costly downtime.

Sight Automation Portal of time plots requested by our client to show movement on an embankment to monitor an active slip. The client used IPIs with ground pressure, water level sensors and a weather station, all installed by Sight Automation, to provide a full insight into events which are increasing the rate of failure.
